Lower Elementary
(Grades 1–3)
From Foundations to Flourishing
At Gladwyne Montessori, Lower Elementary is where students take off - academically, socially, and intellectually. Designed for children ages 6 to 9, this three-year cycle builds on the foundation of Primary while launching students into deeper, more dynamic academic work.
Through individualized instruction, hands-on materials, and intellectually rich projects, students move well beyond grade-level expectations - without the pressure of a traditional competitive environment. They develop the confidence, mastery, and curiosity that set the stage for a lifetime of achievement.
Where Academic Rigor Meets
Joyful Learning
Montessori Elementary education is fundamentally different - and powerfully effective.
Children explore an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes advanced math, rich literature, science, cultural studies, and writing. Lessons are given one-on-one or in small groups, and children work at their own pace to mastery—not just memorization.
Our students are challenged to think critically, ask big questions, and pursue meaningful projects that go far beyond the surface. They are grouped by skill level, not just by age, which allows them to stretch and be supported in every subject.
- Mathematics: From place value and dynamic operations to early geometry and fractions.
- Language & Literacy: Sentence analysis, grammar study, creative writing, and guided reading groups.
- Science: Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science introduced through exploration.
- Cultural Studies: World history, geography, economics, and civilization studies.
- Art, Spanish, Library, PE, and Music: Weekly specials led by subject experts.
A Learning Community That Builds Confidence
Montessori learning doesn’t just build knowledge - it builds the confidence to use it.
Our multi-age classrooms (Grades 1–3) create a culture of leadership, mentorship, and collaboration.
- Younger students learn from older peers.
- Older students reinforce their knowledge by teaching.
- Everyone benefits from a learning environment that emphasizes respect, responsibility, and independence.
Rather than being limited by grade-level boundaries, students are free to grow at their own pace - with expert teachers supporting them every step of the way.
Why Mixed-Age Matters
- Encourages peer-to-peer learning and mentoring.
- Allows for more individualized pacing and challenge.
- Builds empathy, social maturity, and real-world readiness.
- Deepens community connection and continuity over three years.

Lower Elementary Specials
In Lower Elementary, specials are a vital part of the week - giving students space to create, move, and explore while reinforcing core academic skills. Taught by expert instructors, each special grows with the child, offering joyful, purposeful learning and fresh challenges along the way.
Student Assessment
We measure what matters - so we can meet every child where they are and help them grow with intention.
Every student in Lower Elementary has a personalized learning plan, designed by their teacher based on daily observation, assessment, and deep understanding of how they learn best.
And yes - students are assessed. Carefully and purposefully.
We have regular reading assessments and writing evaluations, weekly spelling quizzes, math checkpoints, guided reading groups, and individual conferences ensure accountability and progress. Benchmark assessments begin in Kindergarten and Standardized testing starts in 3rd Grade.
Prepared for What Comes Next
By the end of Grade 3, students leave Lower Elementary with:
- A solid academic foundation—often well beyond traditional grade level
- A strong sense of ownership over their learning
- Advanced skills in reading, writing, research, and problem-solving
- The confidence to take on leadership in Upper Elementary and beyond
Our students don’t just keep up—they stand out. And they do so with humility, emotional intelligence, and a deep love of learning.
