PreK-K Primary Program
Ages 3-6

The Primary Program at Gladwyne Montessori is more than preschool. It is a three-year journey where children develop independence, concentration, early academic foundations, social confidence, and a lasting love of discovery.

In thoughtfully prepared classrooms, children engage in purposeful work that meets them where they are and helps them grow. They learn to make choices, sustain focus, collaborate with others, and take pride in what they can accomplish.

This is where children begin to see themselves as capable learners.

More Than Preschool

The Primary years are designed to build over time.

Children ages 3 to 6 learn in multi-age classrooms where younger children observe and learn from older peers, while older children deepen their confidence by modeling, mentoring, and leading. This three-year cycle creates stability, connection, and a strong sense of classroom community.

The final year — Kindergarten — is the capstone of the experience, when children step into greater leadership, deeper academic work, and readiness for Elementary.

Primary classrooms are beautiful, orderly, and intentionally prepared for young learners.

Children work with hands-on Montessori materials that invite curiosity, repetition, concentration, and discovery.

Child-sized tools and accessible shelves help children make purposeful choices and care for their environment.

Teachers serve as guides, introducing lessons at the right moment based on careful observation of each child’s readiness.

In Montessori, children stay in the same classroom for three years, creating a stable and connected learning community.

Every day in our Primary Program is carefully structured to balance independence with guidance, quiet focus with joyful movement, and academic work with social-emotional learning. While each child follows their own path, every day unfolds in a warm, purposeful rhythm that feels both structured and freeing.

The Five Essential Curriculum Domains

Purposeful Work. Deep Focus.

The uninterrupted work cycle is at the heart of the Primary experience.

During this time, children choose work, receive individualized lessons, practice skills, repeat activities, and move through the classroom with increasing independence. The room is active, but purposeful. Children may be working with math materials, tracing letters, exploring maps, engaging in sensorial work, reading, writing, or caring for the classroom environment.

The goal is not simply to complete a task. The goal is to build focus, confidence, problem-solving, and joy in meaningful work.

Preparing for the Kindergarten Year

The Primary journey culminates in Kindergarten.

By the third year, children are ready for more: more leadership, more independence, more academic depth, and more responsibility within the classroom community. The Kindergarten Year gives children the opportunity to bring together everything they have been building and prepare for the transition to Elementary.

Enrollment & Readiness

Children must be age 3 by September 1 to enter the program. Both morning (9 a.m.–12:45 p.m.) and full-day (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) options are available.

Please note:

Children must be fully toilet trained to join the Primary Program.

The program does not include a structured nap time.
