Overview
For over sixty years, Gladwyne Montessori has been guided by Dr. Maria Montessori’s research-based curriculum. Dr. Maria Montessori was a scientist and visionary with an understanding of human development far ahead of her time. While the Gladwyne Montessori curriculum continues to foster “rigorous, self-motivated growth for children and adolescents in all areas of their development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical,” our school is excited to support this learning by focusing on four strategic areas in the next five years.
The following is Gladwyne Montessori’s Strategic Plan, which is in line with our school’s existing mission.
What is a strategic plan?
A strategic plan for an independent school is a comprehensive document that outlines the school’s long-term vision, goals, and actionable steps to achieve them, ensuring alignment with its mission and values while considering the current educational landscape and future challenges to guide the school’s direction and decision-making process across all aspects of operations; essentially, it’s a roadmap to achieve the school’s desired future state by prioritizing key initiatives and allocating resources effectively.
Important Terminology:
Global Citizenship: Dr. Maria Montessori famously said, “Establishing a lasting peace is the work of education.” Every aspect of the Montessori curriculum reflects this goal, from grace and courtesy lessons to geography and math. Together, this vision of peace and the Gladwyne Montessori curriculum cultivates students who see themselves as global citizens—members of a larger world community who are actively curious about global issues, foster cooperation, respect diverse cultures, and understand their identity as part of a broader, interconnected world.
Cultural Competency: *Originated by Gloria Ladson Billings, Cultural competency is a framework for educators to respect, uplift, and foster an understanding of the cultural values of a diverse student body.
Specials curriculum: At Gladwyne Montessori, the “Specials” curriculum refers to programs that are supplemental to the Montessori academic curriculum, and occur outside of a Montessori uninterrupted work period. As of 2024, these programs include Physical Education (P.E.,) Music, Library, Spanish Language Instruction, Art, and Makerspace.

Our vision is to be the best foundation for a lifetime of learning.
Our values—individuality, curiosity, responsibility, flexibility, connection, acceptance, and joy—are embedded deeply throughout our curriculum. We strive to instill these values within each member of our learning community.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Mission Statement
Gladwyne Montessori embraces the tenets embedded in Montessori peace education that promote the acceptance of all cultures, races, religions, and gender identities, and celebrates the differences of the human experience. Beginning with the study of cultural competency* and diversity in all its forms, community members will be supported in acquiring the awareness and knowledge needed to confront discrimination and foster positive relationships.

Dear Members of the Gladwyne Montessori Community,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and leadership team, thank you for being part of the thoughtful and community-driven process that led to the creation of Timeless Wisdom, Future Vision: A Strategic Plan for Mission-Driven Growth.
From the beginning, we knew we wanted this plan to be rooted in the mission of Gladwyne Montessori and inspired by the century of forward-thinking brilliance found in Dr. Maria Montessori’s pedagogy. Her understanding of education as a tool for peace, individuality, and transformation continues to guide every aspect of our school’s work, and this plan is no exception.
Over the past year and a half, we’ve undertaken this planning process alongside the deep reflection and rigorous preparation of our ten-year accreditation through both the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) and the American Montessori Society (AMS). It was the perfect time to ask ourselves where we’ve been, who we are, and where we’re going.
The result is a plan shaped by many voices. From the parent survey and teacher interviews to group discussions with staff, faculty, administrators, and trustees, every stakeholder in our community played a role. Your insights, hopes, and honesty helped shape a shared vision for the future of our school—one that stays true to our roots while boldly looking ahead.

To our parents, thank you for completing our survey, taking the time to meet with us 1:1 one, and sharing your dreams, ideas, and hopes for our school’s future. Your feedback reminded us what matters most to our families and helped shape a plan grounded in real voices and values.
To our teachers, thank you for going above and beyond your already full days to reflect with us. Your commitment ensured that every step of this plan aligns with Montessori principles and keeps students at the center of all we do.
To my fellow administrators, thank you for honoring and elevating the voices of our faculty while also guiding this plan with care. Your thoughtful leadership has helped position our school to grow with intention, excitement, and long-term impact.

1. Student Programs and Experiences
Our Students As Individuals
Our purpose is to uncover and cultivate each child’s unique strengths while providing an educational foundation that equips them to meet the needs of the world. The prepared environment is vital to Montessori education; by expanding our campus profile, we will enhance programming in physical education, Spanish language integration, outdoor education, musical arts, and specialized areas that meet the development needs of each age level. By integrating the core tenets of the Montessori curriculum with efforts to improve and expand the curriculum and campus that support our special programs, we ensure our students are uniquely prepared to take the next steps in their educational journey.
Action Points:
- Embrace a truly global perspective in all areas of our curriculum, where students learn about diverse cultures and history, global issues, and interconnectedness around the world, aiming to prepare them to be informed and responsible citizens in an increasingly global society
- Embed the principles of cultural competence throughout the classroom and school culture
- Revitalize specials (Art, Music, Library, P.E., Makers, and Spanish,) programs in alignment with Montessori pedagogy and curriculum
- Develop a master campus plan that includes the addition and improvement of athletic and musical arts facilities and enhances the functionality of common spaces
- Celebrate and showcase the skills, knowledge, and attributes of our graduates
- Cement and promote our status as an acclaimed Elementary school that produces graduates who transition well and become leaders in high-ranking public and private schools in the region
2. Community Engagement and Parent Education
Our School As Your Community
Our community is a place where your engagement matters, where we cultivate a feeling of belonging, and where we work together to meet the needs of the whole child. With the needs of families changing through the generations, we aim to assist our parents through parent education and open-door communication that supports the student, parent, and school. Deepening parent engagement serves to meet the needs of the whole child and fosters a sense of belonging that encourages families to remain rooted at Gladwyne Montessori from the start of their enrollment through sixth grade.
Action Points:
- Attract and foster a student body diverse in race, gender identity, socioeconomic status, thought, and culture
- Educate parents on the Montessori philosophy; demonstrate the value of a Montessori education through student success stories and parent education, with a focus on completing the 3-year Montessori cycles, and staying for the Elementary program.
- Increase meaningful parent and student participation in school life
- Expands strategies for recruitment, retention, and program expansion in key areas
- Enhance admissions outreach by partnering with Montessori Toddler-Primary feeder schools and showcasing Elementary program benefits
3. Faculty Excellence and Support
Our Teachers As Your Guides
Our Montessori-trained teachers are vital to understanding the strengths of each student and preparing them for today’s world. Therefore, maintaining a school community where teachers feel valued and become an integral part of our mission is paramount. Our culture, compensation, and community all serve to strengthen the relationships among faculty and staff. This leads to a longer-lasting and deeper impact on our community.

- Provide time and resources for teachers to feel valued
- Foster a culture of faculty support
- Celebrate and highlight teacher achievements
- Attract and cultivate a faculty and staff diverse in race, gender identity, socioeconomic status, thought, and culture

- Stand as a pillar for Montessori best practices, serving as a model for the community and other Montessori schools near and far
