Winnie's Speech at graduation from Gladwyne Montessori School

When I first visited GMS, I made many friends. Out of about the million schools I had visited this one was the right one for me. Although I was happy when I visited I cried the first day. To be truthful, I thought I was going to be in Mrs. Hartnett's class, but after a few days, I soon realized Meg's and Lois's class was just as good.

During first grade I learned many things. I learned to add and subtract by using the long and short bead frame and the stamp game. For writing, Meg had little cards called story starters. I found myself using those a lot. I also started learning about grammar boxes.

My first friend at GMS was Olivia Dubendorf. I met her when all of the kindergarteners were visiting what class they were going to be in for the next year. We got to talking and I learned that she was going to be in first grade with me. On the first day of school I was also introduced to Arielle, Rebecca, and Melissa.

When I went to second grade I wasn't scared at all, in fact I was excited! I couldn't wait to go and learn all the things that the second graders did. I learned about the command cards, which I had loads of enjoyment with. I did my first salt map in the beginning of second grade. It was of South America.

Third grade was a very busy year for me. To get ready for going to the Upper El, I started doing racks and tubes (my favorite), pegboard, gearbox, and division facts at the end of the year. The reason I liked racks and tubes in third grade was because I always felt like a chemist pouring the beads from one tube to another. That was great fun for me. At the middle of third grade a new student came to the class. Her name was Amy. We got to know each other and became very good friends. Another thing that happened in third grade was the third grade trip. Meg and Mrs. Hartnett took us to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and many of the other places in colonial Philadelphia. That was the first time I had been in a horse drawn carriage, which turned out to be really pleasurable.

At the end of third grade, I was very sad. Meg and Lois wouldn't be my teachers anymore since I was going to the upper El. It was hard going to fourth grade.

In fourth grade there was a new teacher. His name was Mr. Guss. I learned about credits and I also did a lot more geography work in fourth grade. I started doing the pin maps and finished all of them by the end of the year. I learned decimals and was introduced to fractions. For history, I studied the U.S. history. I found out a lot about the U.S. in colonial times.

There were only seven people in fifth grade with Mrs. L teaching us. It was very neat having such a small class and having so much individual attention. We started the Weather. We kept daily graphs and the daily temperature. We also learned about medieval history, in fact we did a play called "The Miraculous Eclipse", an adaptation from A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court. I played the main part, Hank. For our projects I did a play on the Vikings about their god, Thor. Lastly, in fifth grade we all went in a limousine to the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The limousine had many cool things in it.

When sixth grade came, I couldn't believe I was there already. After all these years I was going to graduate at the end of the year. In sixth grade I learned about Ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome. I found out many things about their daily lives. For my history project, I did a diagram of the inside of a pyramid, and a game of snakes and ladders. Mrs. L had us start two different science programs. We had Windows on Science, and the Linx program. The Linx program was a program that had a group make models of cars that have to fill requirements. This was also my favorite. As a class trip, we went to the farm show in Harrisburg. We saw many animals and tractors. At our sixth grade trip we went to the Baltimore Aquarium and had lunch there.

After all these years I have had many teachers that helped me plenty over the years. I would like to thank them now for all the help and support they have given me. I would like to thank:

As I go on to Agnes Irwin, I will miss GMS. The people have helped me through all of my elementary years. I wish I could stay instead of leaving. I will always remember GMS.
