Almost an Outdoor Cat
Winner of the Gladwyne Library Junior Author competition - by Ella Cohen

"CheeP chirp ChiRp tEEt tWeeUt"
(They got a cat! Oh my gosh, they got a cat!)

"Weoot teET PleeT CHIP chap CHIP chap"
(You're right, Juliet)
(I know I'm right, Lemonade. FLY FOR YOUR LIFE! FLY FOR YOUR LIFE!)

"Oh Juliet, Lemonade, don't worry. This is Gypsy, our new cat. She will be living with us now."

I went into the kitchen while my mom was making dinner and she was telling me about the responsibility of having a cat. Suddenly we heard a chirping jamboree. I ran into the family room, where the bird cage is, and there was Gypsy on top of the bird cage! I took her down and told her no but the chirping went on …….

"cHeeP tWEEoT tEEt PleeT chEEEEEEEEp chEEEEEEEEp."
(Listen up, Lemonade, this cat is after us. We need a plan. Every time she jumps on our cage or even comes close, make a chirping jamboree and Ella will come save us. DO YOU READ ME? DO YOU READ ME?)

"Oh, guys, what's all the noise about? The kitty's gone."

So I went up to my room to do my homework and there I found Gypsy poking at my rug. I closed my door and sat down with her on my lap. Instead of doing my homework I sat stroking her and talking to her! I said, "Gypsy, you're so beautiful. I love your silky soft fur and how the black base of your fur fades away into the vivid gold streaks on your forehead, I love the creamy colored stripe running down your stomach, and the cute white dot on your nose just makes me think that you're a baby of my very own."

Finally I did my homework and by the time I got finished my home work, went to cheerleading practice, ate dinner, and took a shower, it was time to go to bed. That night Gypsy was roaming the house and at two o'clock in the morning, she jumped on my bed, climbed up my legs and sat right on my face. I tossed her down, but she kept jumping on my face and that night I got no sleep.

The next morning my mom went to work and I went to school and we left Gypsy in the house. When my mom came home she saw a blue thing flying around the dining room. Gypsy was playing volley ball with the blue thing and the blue thing was the ball! She realized the blue thing was Juliet the bird so she caught Juliet and took her back to her cage and opened the door. Juliet flew right in. Mom wrapped tin foil around the frame and the handle on the cage door so that Gypsy could not get in. That night we put Gypsy in the laundry room with her litter box, her food, and her water.

About a month passed by and everything went well until one day we thought Gypsy was ready to become an outdoor cat so we let her play outside for the night. When we called her in the morning she came running. We did the same for the next few nights and everything was all right until one night. We called her in the morning and she didn't come. She was away for days, days turned into three weeks and even four.

Every day at school I would work on my story about her and feel really bad inside. Every time I said her name my heart melted into a wet puddle inside me. I thought I would never see Gypsy again. Every afternoon when I got home I thought, "Please, please let Gypsy be there."

One chilly, gray day in November, I went sadly home. I walked in the door and my mom was smiling and happy. "Ella, guess what! Bruce heard that the neighbors down the street have Gypsy!" I went dancing around the room. I felt fabulous. Then that night we went to pick her up.
That November day was two days before Thanksgiving and I know what I'm thankful for:

Gypsy!

By the way, Gypsy never learned to leave the birds alone.
