| All-Dayers' paintings of Sunflowers, on display in the Primary hall, October 2006 |
"Sunflowers" by the All Dayers were inspired by a tactile and visual observation of real sunflowers and the paintings of Vincent VanGogh. A closer look at a sunflower is a real expression of many concepts studied in the Montessori classroom. For instance, rough and smooth boards isolate that concept; these opposites are found in the rough leaves and smooth petals of the sunflower. A circular shape in the center with curvilinear shaped petals reminds us of the metal insets and geometric cabinet shapes. The flower puzzles in the Montessori classroom have prepared the children to study how a flower can be drawn by breaking it down into parts to create a whole. Then, adding color to the painting creates a beautiful effect. Line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space are elements of art and design inherent in the Montessori materials; art class is a natural extension of the Montessori experience. |
